A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
