Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
