Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
